Program Description:

Wisconsin Study Abroad Grant

**Application cycle for UWinteriM & Spring 2020 is now open**

The Wisconsin Study Abroad Grant provides funding for qualifying UWM undergraduate students to help defray the cost of study abroad. Funding is contingent upon state budget legislation, so may not be available if the program is not funded.  The amount of funding awarded per student differs from year to year based on the number of qualified applicants.   Students participating in semester- and year-long programs generally receive more than students participating in short-term summer, UWinteriM, and spring break or studio programs.  The maximum possible award is $2,000, with an average award of $500.  Because it is a need-based program, meeting application requirements for the grant does not guarantee an award.

To qualify for a Wisconsin study abroad grant you must:
  • be a Wisconsin resident;
  • be classified as an undergraduate student;
  • be enrolled in a bachelor's degree program (this must be your first bachelor's degree); and
  • be participating in a UWM-sponsored study abroad program.
Applicant eligibility is determined by the CIE's Study Abroad Office. UWM's Department of Financial Aid, Student Employment & Military Education Benefits evaluates applicants' need and makes the actual grant awards.

Important Notes for Applicants

You must be enrolled full time (12+ credits) during the fall semester to qualify for a UWinteriM study abroad grant, and during the spring semester to qualify for a summer study abroad grant. (Academic Opportunity Center students must be enrolled for 9+ credits during the fall/spring term).
  • By the last week of the semester: Complete, sign and file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form available online (http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/).
  • By the study abroad application deadline (March 15 or October 15): Complete the Wisconsin Study Abroad Grant application. Begin by clicking the Apply Now button above. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
  • By mid-April/mid-November, for students with all application requirements fulfilled, preliminary notification of award eligibility will be sent via e-mail by Hunter Resler, CIE Study Abroad Financial Specialist.
  • Approximately 10 days before the beginning of the term your award will be posted onto your UWM PAWS account. Please look there for your award amount.
  • For summer applicants, you must be enrolled at least half-time during the summer term (6 credits, including those you earn while studying abroad). You must be enrolled for 6 credits by April 30.
